Abstract
The diagnosis of vesico-ureteral junction obstruction is nowadays generally based on i.v. pyelography findings. Aim of the present study was to determine a quantitative parameter of obstruction, possibly based on ureteral radioactivity/time curves analysis. During the last 22 months, 27 patients aged 1 month to 8 years, for a total of 53 ureters with a diagnosis of primitive megaureter, underwent sequential renal scintigraphy with 99mTc DTPA, all following the same protocol. The regions of interest were drawn over the ureters and the bladder. Increase rate was measured as the angle formed by the 'Time Axis' and the 'Count-Rate Interpolated Line'. Three different curves were evaluated for an obstruction situation (Curve C), non obstructed ureters (Curve A), ureteral dilatation without obstruction (Curve B). The results of the scintigraphic study were comparable to traditional radiology results. Sequential renal scintigraphy, implemented by ureteral curves (ureterograms), seems to be able to distinguish between obstructive and non-obstructive ureteral dilatation.
