Abstract

Objectives. To evaluate biochemical, virologic and histologic effects of leukocyte IFN-α in chronic hepatitis C. Cases. 61 patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with 3 or 6 MU of IFN-α thrice a week for 12 or 24 months. Results. A complete biochemical response was observed in 50% of the patients after 6 months of treatment and in 58% after 12 months. Sustained responses were found, 3 and 6 months after the end of therapy, in 71% and 53% respectively of complete responders. Patients with undetectable pretreatment serum HCV-RNA showed, after 6 and 12 months of therapy, a higher complete response rate (57% and 75%, respectively) than patients with a positive HCV-RNA test (42% and 50%). Among patients with a high (≥10) pretreatment Knodell histologic activity index, after 6 months of therapy non-responders were more frequent (60%) than among patients with low (
