N2 - Lymphocyte mobilization in peripheral blood and lymphoid structures of rats is evaluated after prolonged thoracic duct drainage. Selective depletion of T dependent areas is shown to occur after 6 days of drainage. Lymphocytes not mobilizable from blood (NRL) and from lymphoid structures appear to be B dependent cells. Two major lymphocyte populations, differing in kinetic behavior and histologic distribution, are identified: the promptly recirculating lymphocytes (PRL), T dependent, and the slowly recirculating lymphocytes (SRL), B dependent. An analysis of daily lymphocyte output from the thoracic duct is carried on, and a computation of the PRL is made in 2 different ways, both indicating that in Sprague Dawley rats the PRL pool is made of 7.2 x 109 cells/kg.
