Abstract

The widespread availability of CT and RMN and their routine use in the study of menisco-capsulo-ligamentous pathologies of the knee require a careful definition of what are the real diagnostic possibilities offered by these modern imaging techniques. The authors examine and discuss the techniques of execution, the result, the limits and errors of both CAT and RMN in relation to a series of 5,000 tests of which 370 were controlled using arthroscopy and/or arthrotomy. They conclude that, in spite of a number of intrinsic limits and some possible diagnostic errors, the reliability of both these methods in this pathology is very high, equivalent to 95% provided that the test is carried out using a rigorously correct technique and interpreted by an expert radiologist.
