Abstract
The aim of this review is to furnish both a synthesis of principles and an analysis of experimental observations reported in international literature concerning the problem of oxygen transport in man exposed to low oxygen-pressure. Attention is focused on some relevant biochemical parameters changing the oxygen affnity for hemoglobin, such as allosteric effectors and the cooperativity among oxygen-binding sites. The range of activity concerning such mechanisms is also examined. The experimental investigations carried out on man and animals are compared with the data obtained from indigenous populations living at high altitude. The conclusion is drawn that the adaptation to acute hypoxia is produced by a change in the heme-heme interaction rather than a right-oriented shift of the oxygen dissociation curve of hemoglobin.
