Abstract
The effects of ethanol on monoamine oxidase activity in mitochondrial fractions of rat brain were examined after acute or chronic treatment with ethanol, using dopamine and noradrenaline as substrates. An evaluation of the present and previous findings suggested that dopamine and serotonin were deaminated by the same form of monoamine oxidase, while noradrenaline was deaminated by a different form of monoamine oxidase. Since the most evident changes were found only in the separate mitochondrial fractions and not the total fraction it seems that the action of ethanol takes place in some brain areas and is absent in others.
