Abstract

Thirteen experiments of total body wash out (TBW) in the pig are described. The data collected established certain technical prerequisites of success relating to: the properties of the perfusate; short duration of extracorporeal circulation and assisted ventilation and pharmacologic help. By proper adjustment of the parameters in question directed at protection of lesser circulation, the acute irreversible hemorrhagic pulmonary edema, which is the most striking obstacle to success and the most frequent cause of death, has been eliminated.
