Abstract
Seventy patients affected by sudden deafness, whose age ranged between 3.5 and 14 years, were treated between 1989 and 1993; all patients underwent history and physical examination, liminal tonal audiometry, tympanogram and stapedium reflex tests, brain stem auditory evoked potential, otovestibular examination, CT scan, pediatrics, neuropsychiatry and genetics examinations. Fifty-four patients were affected by monolateral SD and 16 by bilateral SD; 44.28% of cases was secondary to mumps. After analyzing the data, we evaluated the effectiveness of pharmacological therapy compared to a control group. Given the high incidence of SD after mumps, we suggest that the only effective treatment is prophylaxis through parotitis vaccination.
