Abstract
Plasma concentration of glycocalicin (GC) - proteolytic split product of alpha chain of platelet glycoprotein GPIb - and expression of GPIb in 9 'random' (A) platelet concentrates (PC) and in 12 single-donor PCs collected by using two different blood cell separators (Autopheresis C Baxter, B and Cobe Spectra, C) were determined during storage period. At day +5, as compared to day +1 of storage, all three types of PC showed significant increase of PC levels. Moreover, expression of GPIb decreased in type (B) and (C) PCs, in contrast with type (A) PC. Whereas an inverse correlation was demonstrated between the PC concentration and the GPIb expression in type (A) and (C) PCs, type (B) PC lacked such a trend. This feature may be due to the leucocyte quantity of type (B) PC, which could induce cleavage of GPIb from platelet surface as well as further degradation of GC.
