Abstract
Stromal fibroblasts derived from human tumours have been always considered normal cells. In this report it is shown that fibroblasts derived from lung cancers, regularly under go spontaneous transformation when cultured in crowded growth conditions, while fibroblasts derived from non-neoplastic tissues do not transform. This particular behaviour may reflect a preneoplastic state of stromal fibroblasts derived from lung cancers.
