Abstract
Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a non-invasive technique providing in vivo measurement of different chemical substances and chemical and metabolic information on tissue structure. The increasing availability of this technique accompanied by user-friendly software have led to its widescale implementation in sophisticated research projects. However, the clinical application of the technique is still limited due to technical drawbacks and the difficulty in obtaining an optimal spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio because of the long scanning times which most currently used programmes impose on the patient. This study used the PROBE programme (single voxel proton brain exam) which allows automatic acquisition of single volume of interest spectra in a total MB scanning time of about nine minutes and is thus well tolerated by children under general anaesthesia.
