Abstract
In order to define the complex relationship between hormones and epilepsy (E), the serum levels of estradiol (E2), progesterone (Pg), cortisol (C) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) during the mid-luteal phase in 113 women with epilepsy receiving different antiepileptic drug (AED) treatments were compared with those observed in 30 age-matched healthy female controls. The results showed significant alterations in hormone levels in women with epilepsy, which can be ascribed partly to the disease itself and partly to AED therapy.
