Serum trypsin inhibitors in pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis

Abstract

In order to evaluate the modifications of inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor (IATI) in pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis in respect of alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1A) and alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M) and to speculate on possible influencing factors, the three antiproteases were assayed in the sera of 24 control subjects, 26 patients with pancreatic cancer and 30 with chronic pancreatitis. A significant decrease of IATI was observed in pancreatic cancer as compared to control subjects; A1A increased in chronic pancreatic disease. No significant modifications were detected for A2M, with only a trend towards higher levels in the disease state. An inverse linear correlation was documented between serum creatinine and IATI; A1A and A2M were correlated to each other and with age. The increase of A1A and A2M observed in pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis is probably an unspecific response to the pancreatic damage. The decrease of IATI in the same conditions seems to be related, at least in part, to glomerular permselectivity changes.
