Abstract
Risk factors for congenital malformations (CM) were tested in 201 pregnancies in women with epilepsy on antiepileptic therapy monitored prospectively between 1984 and 2001. CMs were found in 8.1% of the offspring. Maternal age at delivery, type of epilepsy, and VPA plasma levels were related to the presence of MC. Moreover, a clear trend for a greater prevalence of family history of malformations was found in the MC group.
