Abstract
In this review, the essential steps of the immune response and the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases are first outlined. Thereafter, novel therapeutic approaches are discussed, which are in the process of being investigated in humans or have already been tested in clinical trials. On the ground of the potential levels of immune intervention, the new therapeutic strategies are subdivided into those targeted to the antigen recognition phase, those acting on the activation phase and those affecting the effector phase. Conventional treatment of autoimmune diseases is not discussed to place emphasis on the novel therapeutic approaches.
