Radiotherapy and radiosurgery for craniopharyngiomas

At present, no firm consensus opinion exists concerning the appropriate management of craniopharyngioma, and no guidelines have been proposed, but radical resection is considered the primary choice for therapy. However, the majority of authors stated that successful management is determined by the ability to preserve independent social life and increasing survival while limiting symptomatic recurrence. In this view, the near-total resection followed by radiotherapy or radiosurgery on tumor remnant may be a suitable alternative to gross-total resection, with the aim of achieving tumor control without the endocrinological and behavioral morbidity associated with aggressive surgery.
