Abstract
The authors present the results of a study undertaken to evaluate modification of body image and psychological distress in a group of 60 patients undergoing breast reconstruction in the period January 1988-December 1992 using 2 different reconstructive methods: permanent expander and Rectus Abdominis myocutaneous flap (TRAM). The statistical analysis pointed out that no significant correlation as evidenced between stress levels and reconstructive methods, while stress levels increase proportionally with time elapsed between mastectomy and reconstruction. The authors conclude underlining the efficacy of breast immediate reconstruction in overcoming the psychological distress following mastectomy.
