Abstract
The Authors note the different incidence of lung cancer in various regions of the world and recall that in 1974 the Italian mortality for this tumour was the 20th for males and the 26th for females in the world. A great increase of incidence of this disease, which is caused by many etiologic agents (smoke, environmental and occupational pollution), has been recorded in the last decades. The Authors think to be very important for the prevention a strong struggle against smoke and the screening of high risk subjects. A precise histologic diagnosis and a careful staging of the disease is mandatory for a correct therapy. Surgery, roentgenotherapy and chemotherapy are separately discussed either for 'oat cell' or for 'non oat cell' carcinoma. Then the epidemiological features and the therapeutic results of a trial performed in Italy are shown and discussed.
