Abstract

The aim of this study was to understand the meaning of the pulsatility pattern of portal flow in patients with congestive heart failure. The authors compared the pulsatility ratio (PR = minimum frequency shift/maximum frequency shift) or portal flow with the right atrial pressure (RAP) previously measured by Swan-Ganz catheter in 19 cardiac patients with congestive heart failure, who underwent consecutive cardiac catheterism for diagnostic purposes. The relationship between RAP and the PR was evaluated by linear regression anlaysis that showed a significant relationship (r = 0.869; p <0.01). We conclude that portal PR is a non invasive index of elevated systemic venous pressures in patients with congestive heart failure.
