Abstract

DNA and histone fractions did not show the presence of lipids detectable by thin layer chromatography (TLC), whereas the non histone chromosomal protein (NHCP) contained approximately 2% lipids in dry weight. As revealed by TLC, all NHCP bound lipids were phospholipids, i.e. sphingomyelin, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. The phospholipid pattern and the ratio of sphingomyelin, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine (about 5:4:1) bound to NHCP of peripheral blood lymphocytes were different from the phospholipid composition of calf thymus lymphocyte chromatin from the nuclear membrane and other membrane fractions.
