The study aimed to evaluate the influence of personality in determining eating attitudes and the type of personality that had the greatest influence on the various attitudes. The sample included 304 subjects (630 males and 224 females) selected consecutively among patients hospitalised at the Istituto Scientifico Ospedale San Giuseppe of the Italian Auxological Centre (IRCSS) for dietary-behavioural treatment of obesity (mean age: 39.1 ± 12.6, mean BMI: 42.5 ± 6.8). All subjects were asked to complete a series of psychological reactive tests, including a questionnaire giving personal data and the Italian versions of MMPI, ASQ and EAT. Multiple regression, was then applied to data obtained from these tests, using the backward elimination procedure. The results showed that psychopathological aspects, especially depression, anxiety and schizophrenia, play an important role in determining the eating attitudes of obese subjects. These findings are also important for therapeutic purposes since it underlines the need for psychological support to dietary treatment.
