Abstract
A total of 70 adult patients with epilepsy were included as being treated for no less than six months with one of the above: CBZ and PB, 20; PHT, 18; SV, 12. Each patient was investigated through history taking, physical examination and neurophysiological evaluation of the median, ulnar, sural and peroneal nerves using standardized methods. A diagnosis of polyneuropathy (PN) was made when electrophysiologic signs of peripheral nerve involvement were present in two or more nerves. Thirthy-two patients (45%) fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for PN and presented signs of sensory-motor lesion, with predominant involmement of the lower limbs and concurrent demyelinating and axonal damage, although all the drugs were implicated, abnormalities were found to a lesser extent among SV users.
