Abstract

About 30 % of patients affected by partial epilepsy are not well controlled by AED therapy and have disabling seizures. In well selected patients, epilepsy surgery may constitute an useful therapeutical approach. Drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy is considered an epileptic syndrome in wich surgery is very effective in controlling seizures. The Epilepsy Surgery Unit of "Neuromed" Institute in Pozzilli (IS) began his activity three years ago. At this time 65 patient affected by drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy, selected by means of non invasive diagnostic protocol (Long term Video-EEG monitoring, MRI and CT scans of the brain, neuropsychologic and psychiatric evaluation, Wada test in well selected cases) underwent neurosurgery: at follow-up (<1 year in 29 patients) 92 % of patients was seizure-free. Sixty one patients with unclear epileptogenic zone were scheduled for invasive investigations (stereo-EEG).
