Abstract
Objectives: To provide new molecular evidence to the epidemiological linkage between viruses obtained from two individuals in a case of likely Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) transmission occurred during a violent fight. Methods: Signature pattern analysis was performed on the gp 120 env V3 region sequences obtained from the two patients' viruses. This method measures the genetic relatedness independently from other methods previously used in the investigation of this case. Results: The transmitter's viral sequences show a significantly higher number of matches to the recipient's signature pattern than those of a control group of infected individuals. Conclusions: HIV-1 has been indeed transmitted during a single episode of violent fighting between two adults.
