Sympathetic innervation of juxtaglomerular cells can exert a direct stimulating action on renin release, but it also exerts an important permissive role in order to amplify and possibly accelerate responses to stimuli affecting the intrarenal receptors. Control of renin release appears to be an integrated function and, under most conditions influencing renin release, intra- and extrarenal controlling mechanisms interact with mutual facilitation and sometimes, with mutual inhibition.
