Abstract
48 patients with a definite diagnosis of multiple sclerosis were typed for 14 HL-A specifications, together with a control group of 386 healthy volunteers. The results were combined with those obtained from an earlier study of 74 patients. The increase in HL-A9 found in the first group was confirmed in the second, and when these results were summated the difference was found to be highly significant. The incidence of HL-A10 + W19 was significantly decreased in the combined results. No significant differences were found in HL-A7 and HL-A3 antigens levels. The HL-A haplotypes of two siblings with multiple sclerosis were analysed and found to identical. The authors discuss the technical and statistical difficulties encountered in this field and also the current hypotheses concerning immunogenetics and multiple sclerosis. (26 references)
