N2 - 1. 1. During the EEG arousal reaction elicited, in the unanesthetized rabbit, by olfactory, visual, acoustic and tactile stimulations, a suppression of cortical convulsive "spikes" was observed. 2. 2. The effect was elicited only after liminal strychninization (0,05-0,1 per cent). The spikes following local application of stronger solution of strychnine (0,1-0,2 per cent) and the spontaneous or reflexly induced epileptic patterns were never suppressed during the arousal reaction. 3. 3. A reversal from inhibition to facilitation was frequently observed when the animal was subjected to stress (fastening to the animal board, noise and light in the surrounding environment, etc.). 4. 4. Reflex facilitation of the convulsive activity elicited by local strychnine was observed also following stimulation of sensory modalities having no specific projection to the strychninized area. 5. 5. A tentative explanation of the predominance of the inhibitory effects in the rabbit is given.
