Abstract

Vasculitides comprise a heterogeneous group of disorders, characterized by the chronic inflammation of arteries and veins of different distribution and size. The infiltration of leukocytes is a common feature. We propose that in vasculitis patients environmental and/or inherited factors interfere with the homeostatic response to dying cells. This attracts and activates inflammatory leukocytes in the wall of blood vessels, transforming the initial vascular damage in a self-sustaining process, with eventual clinically overt disease.
