Abstract

Treatment of gastrointestinal cancer becomes ever more complex. Several new agents and multidisciplinary approaches have shown promise in the management of this disease. A gain in overall survival and disease free survival is the result of several recent clinical trials. Research should be devoted to find more active substances. In the meantime some efforts should be devoted to identify prognostic factors in order to apply different strategies on the basis of the estimated outcome. A joint venture including medical oncology, radiotherapy, surgery together with molecular biology and clinical gastroenterology is mandatory.
