Abstract

Incidence trends (1988-2000) of T1DM in Pavia province. Data collected between 1988 and 2000 by a T1DM registry in the 0-29 population of the Pavia province were analyzed. Father's educational level, urban vs rural residence, family size and the eventual association with the compulsory notifications of viral infections (measles, mumps and rubella) in general population were also investigated. In the study period (13 years) 160 new cases of T1DM were identified. The completeness of ascertainment by two data sources was 99.4%. Mean incidence rates per 100,000 (95% confidence interval) were 11.53 (9.26-14.35), 6.20 (4.9-7.81) and 8.19 (6.99-9.59) respectively in age groups 0-14, 15-29 and 0-29. Father's educational level in families of T1DM patients and the number of children in the families were higher (p <0.02 and p <0.001 respectively) than in the reference population. A seasonal variation of T1DM incidence with a peak in autumn-winter was noticed. The trend of incidence in time showed a peak in 1996-97 in the age group 0-14, which appears correlated with an excess of mumps notifications in the general population in the same period (r2 = 0.52, p <0.067).
