Abstract
A routine method for detection of human papilloma virus DNA in cells of cervical scrapes from normal and abnormal cervices without radioisotopic labelling has been used. Cervical scrapes were analyzed for HPV DNA sequences by dotblot hybridization technique using HPV 16 and 18 probes. With this technique we found that 12 of 57 'normal cytology' and 10 of 50 'pathological' samples were positive to the probes. Taken together 20,6% of the population without pre-malignant lesions showed to have complementary sequences to the HPV 16 and 18 genomes. We, therefore, conclude that peroxidase conjugated probes provide an improved technology, which offers the possibility of using non-radioactive probes to study DNA hybridization in a safe way for routine diagnosis on scraped cells.
