Abstract

The authors have observed a case of gold-induced severe aplastic anemia in which a complete reponse to immuno-suppressive treatment (high dose bolus 6-methylprednisolone) was obtained. The observation suggests that bolus 6-methylprednisolone is able to induce medullary autologous reconstitution in gold-induced severe aplastic anemia. The authors discuss the mechanism of myelotoxicity and the indications for immunosuppressive treatment. This case emphasizes the probable immune-mediated pathogenesis of gold-induced aplastic anemia.
