Abstract
Aims: The Authors have analysed drug's usage during the first year of life in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, an Italian Region. Methods: Cohort study with parent phone interwiev in a cohort of 408 well being and at term birth children from 4 hospitals in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Results: Altogether 2293 drugs have been used. Every child has in media used, during his first year of life, 5.6 drugs, considering all the administered ones, or 4 considering the following classes: antipyretics, antibiotics and drugs for respiratory infections. The use of inappropriate (steroids, beta2-adrenergic agonists, antibiotics for upper respiratory infections) or ineffective drugs (drugs for infantile colic, mucolytics) has been pointed out. The greater number of health problems referred by parents, together with the greater number of office visits, are independent predictors of a greater drugs' administration (multivariate analysis). Conclusion: In this study a prescription's anticipation during the first year of life, already noticed in the following years and reported by other studies, seems confirmed.
