Abstract

Daytime sleepiness has been evaluated in 30 males, 18-30 years of age, seizure-free epileptic patients on monotherapy (10 on phenobarbital (Phe), 10 on Valproate (VPA), 10 on Carbamazepine (CBZ) by means of MSLT with a parallel assessment of mood and cognitive tests involving attention and psychomotor speed. Ten male healthy subjects of comparable age served as controls. The data show that patients on chronic treatment with Phe have a greater daytime sleep tendency than controls and patients on VPA or CBZ. Furthermore they show a worse score at Digit symbol substitution test and at Critical Fusion Flicker tests.
