Abstract

Daytime sleepiness, attentional and psychomotor functions were assessed in patients with generalized epilepsy completely controlled on monotherapy with phenobarbital or valproate (n = 10 in each group). Compared with drug-free healthy controls, patients on phenobarbital tended to exhibit diurnal sleepiness at multiple sleep latency test and reduced psychomotor performance, while patients on valproate showed no evidence of sleepiness and only a marginal decrease in attention level.
