Abstract
Bioelectric parameters were measured, using a BIA101 impedance analyser (Akern srl, Firenze, Italy), in 133 adult male subjects. Patients with chronic liver disease were selected upon biologic and morphologic investigations and were divided into three groups according to degree of disease (49 chronic hepatitis = EC; 36 cirrhosis = CIR; 22 cirrhosis with ascites = ACIR) and compared with the data of 26 healthy controls (NOR). In these patients resistance (R), reactance (Xc), impedance (Z) and phase angle (Φ), age, body mass index (IMC), triceps skinfold (Pt) and arm muscular circumference (CM) were evaluated. The changes of IMC between NOR and EC were in disagreement over the stability of their bioelectric parameters. CM values of CIR and ACIR showed a progressive deterioration of nutritional state coupled with worsening of disease. Our data demonstrated that in cirrhotic patients, Xc is the only bioelectric parameter altered. Because of the correlation between Xc decrease and enhancement of liver disease we suggested that reactance could be used to distinguish CIR from ACIR.
