Abstract
Bleeding from esophageal varices still carriers a high mortality rate despite effective endoscopic and pharmacologic therapies. The Authors review the results of several studies carried out in recent years regarding the clinical approach to variceal bleeding and the role of combined treatments either in acute bleeding or in the prevention of rebleeding. Combined endoscopic and pharmacologic therapies should be increasingly used in order to further decrease the mortality and rebleeding rate in cirrhotic patients.
