Abstract

This review examines the absorptive functions and capacity of the large intestine and ways in which the large bowel contributes to intestinal conservation of nutrients and secretions, i.e. 'salvage'. The role of altered colonic transit in the pathophysiology of impaired salvage and diarrhea is addressed.
