Abstract

The sustainable power output of normal and conditioned LD (latissimus dorsi) has been determined in adult sheep. Uninterrupted (24 h/day) low frequency or cyclic stimulation enables the muscle to attain the final stage of transformation of fast isomyosins in the slow fatigue resistant type so that it became able to perform tetanic contractions at cardiac-like frequency with a sustainable effort of 5 W/kg, a power output that is a fraction of that of the left ventricle and is greater than that of the right ventricle. Results in adult sheep confirm those in smaller mammals and validate the use of the conditioned muscle in right heart replacement and left heart assistance, as scale factor uncertainties are minimized.
