Abstract

A clinical method for the study of spondylo-arthropaties, previously reported in this Journal, was applied in a study of a male control group. The group consisted of 200 subjects who had never been exposed to occupational risks for the spine in their working life, and was divided into four age groups. The following data are reported for each age group: frequency of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spondylo-arthropathy; frequency of scoliosis and lower limb dysmetria; mean values and relative ranges of variability of head and trunk movements along sagittal, frontal and horizontal planes. The relationship between sport and spinal function is also analyzed. The authors discuss the criteria and practical limits of using the results of comparison with similar data obtained in groups occupationally exposed to risks for the spine.
