Abstract

A study on the third-body induced roughening of the prosthetic head in total hip replacement was presented. A finite element model was built which simulated the local behavior of the two coupled bearing surfaces in the presence of entrapped hard particles. An index of induced head damage was defined on the basis of the computational results.
