A rare case of renal neoplasm, stage I Wilms tumour in an adult

Although Wilms tumour is the most frequent neoplastic disease of the urogenital system in children, it is rare in adults. New criteria (according to Kilton) for the diagnosis of Wilms tumour in adults have recently been introduced. We report a case of Wilms tumour in a 30 year old male patient satisfying all the Kilton criteria. In 25 years of experience at the Luciano Giuliani Institute of Urology of the University of Genoa this has been the only case which came to our attention. Due to the small number of cases reported in the literature it has not been possible to define a therapeutic protocol; the use of a combined multidisciplinary treatment (surgical, radiotherapy and chemiotherapy) has been advised. The prognosis, which in turn is associated with the grade of the anaplasia, is worse than that of juvenile Wilms tumours.
